Redefining Naturopathic Medicine in Canada.
NutriChem is Ottawa’s centre for naturopathic medicine trusted around the world.
So, what is naturopathic medicine? Typically, Naturopathic medicine blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural therapeutics. The philosophy lies in finding and treating the root cause of an illness, rather than simply treating symptoms. Naturopathic medicine plays a unique role in the healthcare system as it is one of few areas of medicine that focuses on health maintenance and the prevention of illness.
NutriChem, on the other hand, is an amalgamation of naturopathic medicine, functional medicine, and precision medicine. It is personalized health care, where finding the underlying cause of illness still remains at the root of what we do, but treatments blend the most effective, efficient, and safe options. Everything we do is guided by nature, but rooted in science.
Collaborative healthcare means better results
In Canada, Naturopathic medicine provides patients with a choice when it comes to their health. It is no longer simply between “allopathic” or “naturopathic.” The choice can be a combination of what works for you, as an individual. In order to achieve this, collaboration amongst healthcare professionals is essential.
Working in a team setting allows clinicians with different skill sets to work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients. NutriChem’s healthcare team includes naturopathic doctors, clinical pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and holistic nutritionists.
Education that gives you control of your health
Education is a critical part of naturopathic medicine because it allows patients to have an active and informed role in their own health. The ever-evolving research in nutritional science, genomics, microbial health, and epigenetics shows that an individualized approach in healthcare is essential. This approach not only includes treatments that are tailored specifically to the patient’s needs, but also to education around those treatments.
Individualized treatment for each patient
NutriChem’s naturopathic doctors primarily use dietary interventions, nutritional supplements, and botanicals as treatment modalities. The treatments, dosages, and the routes of administration are each based on the individual. If digestion and/or absorption of nutrients are a concern, alternative methods, such as vitamin injections or IV vitamin/mineral therapy, may be used.
Hormone treatment that caters to you
When it comes to treating hormonal imbalances, naturopathic doctors can prescribe bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). The doses of BHRT can be personalized to match those of each individual’s needs, ensuring each patient is getting the correct amount of hormones—no more, no less.
Naturopathic doctors monitor patients on hormone therapy to ensure safety and efficacy of treatment. They can also prescribe natural desiccated thyroid hormones, on an individual basis. All of NutriChem’s naturopathic doctors have completed the additional training required in order to prescribe additional therapeutics, such as bio-identical hormones, desiccated thyroid, and administer IV Vitamin therapy.
Only the most qualified naturopathic doctors
In Ontario, becoming a doctor of naturopathic medicine requires a minimum of seven years of post-secondary education from a recognized school before registration as a Naturopathic Doctor (ND). They also require an undergraduate degree, premedical undergraduate prerequisites, and completion of a four-year, accredited, naturopathic medical education. Graduates must pass two sets of provincial licencing board exams and must keep their registration current by completing at least 70 hours of approved continuing education every three years.
All of NutriChem’s Naturopathic doctors have obtained their doctorates from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. Naturopathic doctors in Ontario have the ability to requisition lab tests from any accredited lab in Ontario. Testing is an invaluable tool that is utilized to uncover the root cause of illness.

Naturopathic medicine for high blood pressure goes above and beyond the use of anti-hypertensive medications. We understand that gut health, genetics, and electrolyte balance can play a major role when it comes to blood pressure. These will all be taken into account when designing a personalized treatment plan for high blood pressure.
Naturopathic medicine for vertigo is far more common than one would expect. With little to no allopathic treatments for vertigo, patients are often left feeling helpless to this debilitating condition. Viral infections, hormonal changes, microbiome disruption, and nutritional deficiencies can all contribute to sensations of vertigo.
Naturopathic medicine for eczema includes calming and healing the barrier layer of the skin while reducing the risk of future skin flares. Shifting gut health and inflammation can have a major impact on skin irritation. Individualized diet plans and nutrition are also a mainstay of our treatments of skin conditions.
Naturopathic medicine for heart disease is about identifying areas of risk for a patient and targeting those areas with an individualized treatment plan. Genetics, nutrition, inflammation, lifestyle, diet, and lipid levels are all areas that should be investigated when treating or trying to prevent heart disease.
Naturopathic medicine for SIBO includes eradication, recovery and remission phases. Not all individuals can tolerate the treatments for Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth (SIBO) so individualization is essential.
Naturopathic medicine for migraines is one of the most researched and effective therapies. Identifying triggers and stabilizing fluctuations in the body can be immensely helpful for reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines. Blood sugar control, hormone balance, thyroid function, and inflammation are all areas that would be investigated when it comes to uncovering the underlying cause of migraines.
